Compare the location of majority of earthquake epicenters with the location of volcanoes around the world

Sagot :

Answer:

The location of Majority of Earthquake Epicenters vs. The Location of Volcanoes around the World.

The majority of recorded earthquakes are near the edges of oceanic and continental plates.

Let's define the two:

  • Oceanic Plates are tectonic plates that are within the sea.
  • Continental Plates are tectonic plates that are with in the land.

If we look at the map of volcanoes around the globe, it can be observed that the volcanoes are populating the areas near  the sea and land.

The observation only shows that it is because just like what we have said earlier, the tectonic plates near the edges of continental plates and oceanic plates are most active.

The Pacific Ring of Fire for example record high magnitudes which ranges from 4 - 7 magnitudes  of earthquakes in the past year.

The below are the countries with most number of active volcanoes

  • Russia
  • Philippines
  • Malaysia
  • Japan
  • Papua New Guinea
  • Mexico
  • Philippines
  • Chile

If we will observe the location of these countries it can be said that these are countries which are near or borders a body of water. Also these countries are within the Pacific Ring of Fire.

For more proof that earthquakes mostly occur in the edges of a continental and oceanic plates, let's take for example the location of the most powerful earthquake that ever existed which recorded 9.5 magnitude. The location of this earthquake is in Chile, and upon checking, it borders a body of water.
