daedalus action and what it tells about him

Sagot :

Daedalus' actions and choices as an inventor mirror his personality and his way of thinking. His abilities as a skillful craftsman are surely undeniable in the stories told in Greek Mythology. However, his excellent skills had also led to his undoing. Because of his abilities, he became too proud and jealous. In addition to this, many renowned Greek characters had often asked for his help which resulted in him being entangled with problems in the stories.

The following are some of his actions:

  1. Before coming to Crete, Daedalus had a nephew who was also his apprentice named Talus. Talus was a young inventor with a creative mind and enthusiastic personality. He showed great promise as an inventor, and this made Daedalus envious. Because of envy and fear that someday his apprentice will surpass him, Daedalus had murdered Talus. This act displays Daedalus' pride and ego.
  2. Because of the murder of his apprentice, Daedalus was banished from Athens. He then came to Crete where King Minos welcomed him because of his talents. Here, he was entangled with problems in the story once again. Queen Pasiphae who was enamored with a white bull asked Daedalus to create a way for her to mate with the creature. Unable to reject the Queen's request and his willingness to take bold risks, he did her bidding. Because of this, King Minos had ordered him to create the labyrinth and soon imprisoned him in a high tower with his son, Icarus. Daedalus' inability to refuse requests stems from his desire to take bold risks when it comes to his inventions and this resulted in his imprisonment.

Who are King Minos and Queen Pasiphae?

King Minos and Queen Pasiphae are the key characters during Daedalus' stay in Crete. Daedalus worked closely in the royal household where he also created toys for the children of King Minos and Queen Pasiphae.

  • King Minos is the ruler of Crete. He is said to be a great warrior because of his victories throughout the Aegean Islands, Athens, and Megara. He is also said to be a just ruler who discusses laws to be passed with his father, Zeus. Despite being a great ruler, King Minos had defied the Gods when he refused to sacrifice the white bull and instead, tricked them by sacrificing an ordinary bull. This angered the Gods and had made Queen Pasiphae fall in love with the white bull.

  • Queen Pasiphae is a sorceress, like her sisters. Because of her husband's choices, she was cursed to fall in love with the white bull. She asked Daedalus to create a way for her to seduce the creature and mate with it.
