Sagot :
Answer:
What effect did Orpheus’s music have on people and gods? Cite two examples of this.
The music played by Orpheus has a calming effect on those who hear it.
Here are two examples of situations when his music positively affected the listener in his favor:
- When he was able to put Cerberus to sleep.
- The time when he convinced the God of the underworld Hades and his wife Persephone to release the soul of his wife.
Explanation:
With musical and poetic talents passed on to him by his parents the god Apollo and the muse Calliope, Orpheus’s soothing music has a disarming effect on all who hear it. He plays his music with an instrument that was handed to him by his father called a Lyre, which looks similar to a harp. It has been said that animals would calm down and listen whenever they hear Orpheus playing his music and that trees and rocks would start moving as if they wanted to dance.
His unearthly musical skill became useful after his wife Eurydice died from a snakebite, after which he decided to do the following:
- Journey to the underworld after a hint from the gods.
- He came across Charon, the ferryman of the River Styx.
Even before he formally entered the underworld, Orpheus already made use of his music. Strumming his lyre, he was able to cross the River Styx without paying Charon his fee, it seems that enjoying his music was payment enough. Even before the journey took place, it was the gods that he touched with the music that hinted about his chance of getting his wife’s soul back.
While he was in the kingdom of the dead, he faces Cerberus and calmed the three-headed creature with his playing. Then he stood in front of the rulers of the underworld and begged for another chance to spend more time with his wife Eurydice. Some say that Orpheus's playing did not completely work on King Hades but instead connected with the queen so much that she, later on, persuaded her husband to grant the traveler’s wish.
So, up to that point, Orpheus was able to get everything he wanted and it was all thanks to his musical talent.
