Answer:
Why did Orpheus try to rescue his wife from the underworld?
Love is the reason why Orpheus tried to rescue his wife Eurydice by traveling down to the underworld.
Explanation:
Here are the events that led up to his decision to take Eurydice back:
- Orpheus met a nymph named Eurydice.
- They quickly fell in love with each other.
- After some time they decided to get married.
- While walking along near a grassy area, she was bitten by a snake.
- Eurydice died from the serpent’s venom.
- The unfortunate event broke Orpheus’s heart.
- He decided to go to the underworld and beg Hades to allow him to have his wife back.
Once there, he was able to get past creatures that may be considered as the gatekeepers of the underworld:
- Cerberus
- Kharon
Cerberus was tamed by his music as he sang and played his musical instrument called a lyre. The normally ferocious 3 headed canine monster laid down as if to enjoy the music and rest.
The boatman Kharon who gives ferry rides across the river Styx did not charge Orpheus after hearing his lovely music.
Later on, Orpheus met Hades and his queen Persephone and asked for more years with Eurydice. After a lengthy convincing and some music, he was given a chance to guide his wife out of the Hades’s world under the condition that he must not look back at her until they both reach the outside world.
Orpheus failed this test which immediately sends Eurydice back into the underworld. Later in the story, the two were united in the underworld but not after a terrible death was suffered by Orpheus in the hands of the Maenads.
