Orpheus' Strength

  • Because of his talents, Orpheus was able to join in some adventures in Greek Mythology. The famous musician joined the Argonauts--a group of heroes who joined Jason and is known for their great expedition, the search for The Golden Fleece. When the Argonauts were about to cross the sea where the Sirens were, Orpheus used his abilities to drown out the sound coming from the Sirens. The music that the Sirens make cause sailors to jump from the ship and fall into their deaths. It can also cause them to sail their ship right against the rocks, crashing it in the process. Orpheus proved that his musical ability is so powerful that it can outmatch those of evil creatures'. Apart from having a powerful musical ability, he is also shown to be passionate and brave.

Orpheus' Weakness

  • Orpheus married Eurydice, a woman he was so in love with. Unfortunately, the marriage was short-lived as Eurydice fell into her death because she was bitten by a snake. Grief engulfed Orpheus as he played his lyre. Apollo noticed this and told him to go to the Underworld to see his wife one more time. He was able to reach the Underworld because of his musical abilities. He was also able to move everyone into tears including those who were punished in the Underworld. Along with this, Orpheus played music for Hades and Persephone. Both the Gods were moved and agreed that he take his wife back to the land of the living with one condition: Orpheus must not look back until they have completely ascended back to the land of the living.
  • Eurydice followed Orpheus behind as they climbed back up to the land of the living. Orpheus felt uneasy, though, because he could not hear his wife's footsteps. He felt that Eurydice was not really following him.  Because of his uneasiness and his impatience, Orpheus looked back only to see his wife being whisked away back to the Underworld where she can never leave again. Because of the lack of trust he had for Hades, he had failed to bring his wife back to the land of the living--making his impatience and lack of trust his two weaknesses.
