Here are some noticeable character traits that are common in Greek stories and their past reality:

  • They are a warlike culture.
  • They have a fascination with mechanical creations.
  • They had questionable morals (compared to what is acceptable today).  

It probably wouldn’t be wrong to say that war has always been a part of western Europe ever since they started their first empire. There has always been the struggle for power, control, and dominance over each other and of other people.  

Here are examples of mythical and real conflicts in their stories:

  1. The titanic battle between Zeus and Kronos.
  2. The Trojan war.
  3. The Peloponnesian War between Sparta and Athens.
  4. The countless problems between gods and men due to mere insults or perceived lack of respect.  

The Greek consciousness is filled with images of these conflicts, we can see this in their artworks such as paintings on walls and pottery which are decorated with images of real and mythical battles.  

The Greece we know today is not the Greece of the past, the famous cities we know were separate from each other and would often quarrel and engage in battles. Only when an invader from what is seen as a truly foreign land such as the Persians (modern day Iran) threatens them would they join forces to repel it.  

The Greeks probably had some of the most advanced cultures at the time. They have created structures that have influenced many to this day. By studying their ancient stories, you would notice the presence of mechanical creations. These contraptions played a big part in these myths and have often times become representations of the entire story.  

Here are some examples of them:

  1. The wings of Daedalus and Icarus.
  2. The mechanical toys in these stories.
  3. The labyrinth to hold the Minotaur.
  4. The Trojan Horse.

They are so popular that you can still see them being used today as posters for movies and the cover for books. The prominence of these mechanical and structural creations in their literature fits perfectly with the Greek’s ancient philosophical and mathematical reputation. This tells us that their people’s interest with them played a major role in the advancement of modern society in that part of the world.  

Judging from the portions in their stories wherein sexual encounters took place, it would appear that there are no taboos when it comes to partners. Contacts between gods, their siblings, men, and beasts are frequent events of the stories. Rapes and abductions are common and so are negative feelings such as jealousy and the desire for vengeance. Based on the stories and myths, the Greeks seem to have a very different set of moral values, far from what most societies today abide by.  

Aside from those mentioned above, they are probably just like us, they admire bravery, love, humility, heroism, and kindness. The character flaws that were discussed are just magnified in those stories but they do occur to this day hidden in our imperfect societies.
