In the story of Orpheus, we can see that the gods are willing to help a human that is suffering emotionally.

Just like most western gods who themselves often fall short of the demands they place upon their human worshipers, the Greek ones are no exception, they hate, they punish, they covet and desire, disgustingly immoral at times by today’s standard. But just like their human subjects, they do recognize goodness and at times reward kindness. They can be touch by emotions as we have seen in this story.
Here are the two moments when the gods were moved by sad emotions expressed in this story:
- When Orpheus lost his wife.
- When Orpheus was able to persuade the rulers of the underworld to have more time with his wife.
We do have to consider that Orpheus is a relative of the gods and a passive one at that. Being the son of Apollo and Calliope makes him part of Olympus’s family tree. That may have played a part in their decision to help him but it is his obvious sadness accentuated by his musical and poetic genius that truly won the gods.
Here are certain things that gods consider before they help any human:
- They have to be related.
- They have to be attracted to the person.
- They must promise to honor him.
- There has to be a certain benefit in helping the mortal.
We can see this in many different stories of Greek myth. One example of this is when Zeus helped himself to Danae the daughter of Acrisius the king of Argos. Zeus was clearly attracted to her when he went through the trouble of transforming himself to golden rain to make her pregnant. It was clearly desire and pity at the girl's situation that prompted Zeus to do what he did. This concern for Danae extended to their son Perseus, proof of this is Poseidon's guidance of their box to Seriphos island as ordered by Zeus the god of thunder also provided a hand to Perseus by giving him magical weapons and armor in his quest for the gorgon’s head.
Gods also thrive on praises given by the people and would often collude with the kings to erect monuments to them in exchange for a bountiful harvest or catch. Poseidon is a good example of this, he promises many of the ocean’s wealth in exchange for constant recognition and honor from the people.
The Greek hero Jason, leader of the Argonauts was aided by the Goddess Hera because of the kindness he showed by helping an old woman cross the Anavros river. This old woman was actually Hera in disguise, because of this act she then blessed Jason against Pelias who wish to harm him. Hera was under the protection of Goddess Hera throughout his search for the golden fleece.
So, it is clear that the gods are no different from humans aside from their powers and immortality they are just like us. We can see this in the story of Orpheus and other events in Greek Mythology.
