Here are the things that Arachne did to bring Athena’s curse upon her:

  • She could have shown less pride when the nymphs said that her skill in weaving could have only come from the Goddess Athena.
  • She could have stayed humble instead of claiming in front of the old woman that she was a better weaver than the Goddess.
  • Arachne should have backed down from the challenge instead of trying to humiliate a goddess in a contest.
  • Finally, she could have chosen a better subject for her weave instead of embroidering on to it the faults, abuses and imperfect character flaws of the Gods.

Arachne’s problem started when she started flaunting her skill in weaving as soon as the nymphs from the woods heard about her. You see here, she really could have just given a smile instead of displaying too much pride by saying she owes none of it to the Goddess. After the nymphs, she said the same thing with the old woman who was actually Athena in disguise. And this time she actually made it worse by claiming that she is better than the Goddess. Make the sins of the gods as the main subject of her work didn’t help at all, it only fueled more anger from Athena.
