The virtues highlighted are still observed these days, though the story How Odin Lost his Eye is from the Norse Mythology it reflects human nature. Our innate goodness gives us the ability to feel empathy and as the story implies, Odin sacrificed his right eye for the benefit of both the people and the Gods. He loved his creations and was willing to do what is right and to protect men and women.

The virtues presented were also an attribute of Odin, like so:

  1. Standing up your ground for your beliefs
  2. Using temporary Solution
  3. Having strong determination
  4. Defending your beliefs
  5. Doing hard work

These are the virtues commonly observed these days based on the text. Our current society is more on survival of the fittest and in this case having a strong will and determination gives you an advantage.  And standing up for your beliefs without being fazed by others’ opinions and judgments.

Now, these virtues are rarely observed but still present today. Because it works internally but if you really pay attention to that person using this virtues then you will surely observe it. Many people do not value virtues anymore, amorality, practicality, selfishness, greed, and immorality seems to be the norm. In fact, someone who observes virtue may be laughed at by his peers. Even parents today may push their children to bend the rules to get what they want.  

Here are some things I’ve personally heard from people:

  1. You should marry a rich guy.
  2. Who cares about passion, there is no money in that line of work.
  3. So what if he’s a good guy, he doesn’t have money.
  4. You can go overseas and marry any guy and divorce him later once you’ve got your papers.
  5. What is the point of being a hero if you are going to die?  

I think society is so caught up in making money and having more of it to get material things that they desire that have really thrown the observance of virtues out the window. It has always been said that money is the root of all that is evil and it appears that this quote is eternally relevant. It seems to have a corrupting quality that brings out the worst in all of us.

  • Honor
  • Truthfulness
  • Justice
  • Temperance
  • Liberality
  • Friendliness
  • Good temper
  • Honesty

All of these important virtues are on life support now, they are no longer relevant since they are so antithetical to what is necessary for the pursuit of wealth and fame. The do whatever you have to do win attitude won over society.
