As a student, To love like Jesus, we must do the following:

1. Be aware of your surroundings. Rather than living a detached, unconnected existence, we need to connect more intimately with our lives and the people in them.

2. Make yourself approachable. It's critical that people feel comfortable contacting us; in other words, we need to become less exclusive in our dealings with others and more friendly to those who approach us.

3. Be grace-filled. We must be willing to engage in less judgmental interactions with others.

4. Take a chance. "For God gave us a spirit not of fear, but of power, love, and self-control," says the Bible (2 Timothy 1:7, ESV).

5. Give of yourself. We need to become more invested in those around us and less self-absorbed. Jesus showed these attributes time and over to convince us that they are not unachievable standards. Instead, they're a practical means to grasp a heavenly ideal on a human scale.

It's a frequent misconception that loving like Jesus requires you to be a doormat, a wimpy weakling, or a spoilsport. Some people feel that loving like Jesus requires us to give up everything, lose out on all of life's pleasures, and suppress our joy. That, however, is not the case. The ability to practice love in our everyday relationships–marriage, friends, family, and so on–is the distinguishing mark of human pleasure. We learn to love others if we love Jesus.
