The major use of the exoskeleton in arthropods is for protection and serves as a barrier against dessication.

The exoskeleton is multilayered with the following layers:
- epicuticle - acts against dessication, it is wax covered
- procuticle - provides the strength for the exoskeleton
- epidermis
- basement membrane
Exoskeleton are made of or does contain chitin with the addition of calcium carbonate which really makes them harder and stronger. Sometimes, the exoskeleton puts limit to their growth. They also shed when outgrown.
