The coldest places on Earth are found near the poles due to the tilt of the Earth's axis.

  • The Earth's axis tilt an approximately 23.5°  vertically relative to the plane of the Earth's orbit around the sun. This means that during the Earth's rotation or journey around the sun the poles receive varying amounts of sunlight.
  • The polar regions receive less of the Sun's energy due to the tilt of the Earth's axis. It only receive few sunlight or sun energy for part of the year. The lesser the solar energy received, the lesser the temperature.
  • During winter, the pole receives no sunlight at all because the pole is tilted away from the Sun.
