The two types of software

There are two types of software called application software and system software.

System software are considered to be more important software as you cannot use your computer without them. They have something to do with the control, configuration, settings and specifications of your computer. Your computer rely on them.

Examples of system software are:

  • Operating System - they manages the input and output devices of your computer. Aside from controlling your devices, operating system manages the tasks and processes inside your computer. Examples of Operating systems are: Windows, Linux and MacOS
  • Basic Input and Output System - this is known as BIOS. BIOS controls the boot sequence and boot data of your computer. Without this, you cannot start your hard drive which contains your Operating system.  
  • Drivers and Utilities - Drivers are special software which introduce your computer to additional hardware you have installed. Some extra hardware cannot be recognized by your computer thus, you need drivers to make use of these additional hardware.

Application Software are types of software which performs specific task. They are smaller than system software. Such specific task includes, documents, slideshow, spreadsheet, games and etc.

Examples of Application Software:

  • Word Processing Software
  • Spreadsheet
  • Slideshow
  • Games
  • Video Players
