  • Damiana L. Eugenio, the mother of Philippine Folklore, compiled and edited what could well be considered the largest collection of proverbs in our world. There is a minimum number of these works in existence. She spent her life gathering bit of folk literature that  showed our ancestral wisdom.When she collected proverbs from various parts of our country, she proclaimed that our elders lived by simple, but very necessary, holy rules of  living.

According to Damiana L. Eugenio there are 6 proverb groups

1. Proverbs reflecting a general attitude towards life and the rules regulating it.- which means that if you save, there is no earthly happiness that is not weighed down with tears.

2. Ethical proverbs which recommend certain virtues and condemn some vices. – That means don't postpone what you will do today for tomorrow.

3. Proverbs, which transmit a value system. – That is to say a young man is like meat that  smells bad.  

4. Proverbs that convey general truths and observations about life and human nature. - That means being too late is a positive thing.

5. HUMORE proverbs.- the love of an old man is like a snail that crawls.  

6.Splendid proverbs. – Which means A fool loves Wicked behaviour, but a man of knowledge  delights in wisdom.
