The Big Bang Theory

Big Bang Theory is the well-known explanation on how the universe started. To define it in simple words, it states that the universe as we know it began with a small singularity, and then eventually expanded over the next 13.8 billion years to the cosmos.  The term "big bang" was coined because the theory explained that the universe came from an explosion of a small heavenly body, and then eventually expanded.

Since there are no advanced equipment that can allow astronomers to trace back the universe's birth, most things we do know and understand about the Big Bang Theory comes from mathematical formulas and models. But astronomers can trace back the process of the expansion of the universe through a phenomenon known as the cosmic microwave background.

Majority of the astronomical community accepts the big bang theory but there are some theorists who have alternative explanations on how the universe began.

Some of these alternative theories are:

  • Eternal inflation (Existence of a multiverse)
  • Oscillating universe (Endless series of big bangs)
  • Steady state universe (Infinite universe, no beginning and no end)

Up until now, more astronomers are still devoted on researching and making mathematical models on how really the universe began.
