The properties of life include growth, cells or order, sensitivity to stimuli, adaptation, reproduction, regulation, metabolism and homeostasis. Usually, for something to be considered alive, they must have all of these properties. Hence, a virus is not considered alive as though it has some properties, it does not have cell membranes, do not grow, and outside of a host cell, unable to replicate.  

Living organisms also has metabolism, which is necessary for life and survival.
