I have seen some things closely. Being a doctor and being a one and only medico in the family.

A decade ago, when I was just cleared MBBS and was persuing my PG , one of my cousin had a Dengue fever.

He was an epileptic guy of 30 years old and youngest son of my uncle. Too much loved and pampered.

In dengue fever , once he lost his control / had seizures and fell down such that he had trauma to his cervical spine ( neck bones). He was admitted for a month for dengue hemorrhagic Fever and then was on ventilator for 2 months because he was paralyzed below his neck due to that trauma. He had sepsis ( infection in all organs ) and couldn't come out of it.

Being a only medico, I used to visit him daily in ICU, look into his condition and explain it to my cousins and uncle aunty. It was hard and painful.

One day, as expected, as there was no recovery, I had to explain my relatives to take a harsh decision to remove his ventilator and let him die peacefully.

They were not ready. Nobody would ever be ready to give up hopes. Yes it's the hardest thing to lose hopes and let go of a person from you life permanently.

I encounter such parents, siblings, and relatives who don't want to give up. They want to hold on even the last moments with their loved ones. They struggle, keep hopes and spend their day and nights in waiting rooms believing that their patients would be healthy one day.

Hope is the only thing which keeps us all going. It is the hardest thing to give up.
