Sagot :
The oracle that was delivered to King Acrisius is that he will be killed by his daughter's son. When the oracle was delivered to him, his daughter was still childless and unmarried. Afraid of his future, King Acrisius imprisoned her daughter in a bronze tower and ordered that men were not allowed to enter so that she will remain a virgin and childless for as long as she lives.
Who is King Acrisius?
- King Acrisius is the ruler of Argos and the son of Abas and Aglaea. He also had a twin brother named Proetus. He and Proetus had always been rivals. Not wanting his brother to ascend the throne, Acrisius had taken all his father's inheritance and put Proetus into exile. Thus, Acrisius became the King of Argos. However, Proetus soon took back his share of the kingdom with the help of his father-in-law.
- King Acrisius had married Eurydice. They only had a daughter whose name is Danae. Because of the lack of male heir, the king of Argos grew concerned and worried. He sought the help of the Oracle of Delphi and asked if he would have a son in the future. Instead, the oracle answered him by saying that his grandson will kill him. This scared the king and resulted in his succeeding choices.
Danae and the Golden Shower
- King Acrisius had locked Danae in a bronze tower where no men will be able to get close to her because of the lack of windows and doors. However, Zeus grew fond of Danae's beauty and came to her in a form of a golden shower. Zeus had impregnated her through this which unleashed the anger of King Acrisius. However, he still did not want to kill his grandson because he feared the wrath of the Furies. Instead, he had ordered that his daughter and grandson be locked in a chest and thrown to the sea.
- Zeus, out of concern for his son, asked Poseidon to calm the waters so that his lover and son would be cast safely to shore. And there, Danae cared for his son, Perseus until manhood.
