On the other hand, justice is supposed to be the overarching value that governs our public life. In a liberal democracy, institutions, laws, and practices strive toward fairness, which, strangely, also has the virtue of blindness; it's nature is to look past personal and emotive attachments in order to treat (and assess) everyone fairly and equitably. Partiality vs. impartiality, personal vs. social and political, private vs. public, warm vs. frigid, emotions vs. reason, relational vs. individual, specific and embedded vs. general and abstract are only some of the traditional dichotomies that love and justice represent. It has now become common, alongside the critique of the narrow focus of liberalism and liberal values, to question these sharp distinctions.
