What is Beowulf?

Beowulf is a heroic poem named after its main character, Beowulf, a Scandinavian hero whose battles are fierce and grand. The epic poem is divided into two parts:

  • In the first part of the literary piece, Beowulf had come across the monster, Grendel, in Heorot. Grendel is a fearsome monster who attacks Heorot for years, leaving the citizens unable to use the mead hall. However, Beowulf bravely intercepted Grendel during one of its outbursts and mortally wounded the creature. Soon after, Grendel's mother avenged his son. The fierce battle between Grendel's mother and Beowulf resulted in him beheading the creature and arising victorious once again.
  • In the second part of the epic poem, Beowulf had battled with a dragon. He fought bravely with one of his loyal men, Wiglaf, as the others had deserted the battle because of fear. Wiglaf and Beowulf were victorious in the battle, however, this left Beowulf mortally wounded.
