the Rizal family are one of the wealthiest families during their time. They were considered privileged, well-educated, and influential. Jose Rizal came from a thirteen-member family comprising his parents, Francisco Mercado II and Teodora Alonso Realonda, and nine sisters andone brother. The Mercado-Rizal family had traces of Japanese, Spanish, Malay, and even Negritoblood aside from Chinese. Jose Rizal's first teacher was his mother, who taught him how to read and pray and who had encouraged him to write poetry. In later times, private tutors taught the young Rizal Spanish and Latin before they sent him to a private school in Biñan. Also, he entered the Ateneo Municipal de Manila at eleven. He earned excellent marks in subjects like philosophy, physics, chemistry, and natural history.
