Scanning has two meaning in the world of ICT, especially in using computers and like devices:

Scanning could mean, looking at the malwares using your installed anti-virus in your computers and other devices. A malware is a malicious or harmful software which could be installed or lurking in your computer without you knowing it. Normally, malwarse are from files which has sent to you by unknown senders and carried out by some free files which you got from torrents and other free sources. The job of the malware files is up to no good. It could, delete, move, copy or modify your files even you are not doing anything. It could corrupt your system and worst, steal your confidential information. The best way to prevent  malware is to install an anti virus (AV) software, where the AV could perform a scan and look for any threats. If a threat is found,  the file will be quarantined and deleted in your system.

Another term for scanning means capturing an image of a document or any paper and creating a digital copy of it by using  a device called scanner. A scanner is an  output device which is normally connected to a port at the back  of the computer and can create image copies of documents.
