       Short Summary of the Story, “Keesh”

Keesh and his family lived in north pole. His father, Bok, used to hunt meat and would divide it equally to the people in their tribe. One day, Bok died while hunting. Since then, the tribe could not eat fresh meat. Keesh told the council in a meeting that they also need fresh meat to eat. He was sent away in the meeting and Keesh set a journey to hunt fresh meat by himself. He did not returned for few days that all the people, including his mother thought that he had died. After few days, Keesh returned with fresh meat. The council sent spies to follow Keesh when he went on hunting again and they saw how he hunted meat. When Keesh got back home, the council asked him what kind of witchcraft he used in hunting but Keesh said it was head-craft. Keesh demonstrated to the council how he killed a bear and since then they copied what he did and the tribe was never hungry again. When their chief died, Keesh was hailed as the new chief of their tribe.

  • Brave  

As young as thirteen, at the first part of the story, Keesh stood up to the council fighting for a cause which is the fairness of distributing fresh meat to his family and to the people in their tribe. It is also known that his father died of hunting therefore until his last breath, Keesh’s father bravely tried to hunt and kill big bears for meat. In the middle also of the story, Keesh once again showed his bravery by hunting fresh meat by himself alone without fear that he might take after his father’s fate.

  • Loving  

They did not only love each other in the family but also the people in the whole tribe. When Bok (Keesh’s father) was alive, he would bring meat in the village and equally distribute these to all the people in the tribe. Keesh thought of the same way when his father was not already around. His mother, Ikeega is also loving in the sense that she bravely looked for her son when the latter did not go home for few days. She even showed sadness by putting black oil in her face when she thought that her boy is already dead.

  • Generous  

Both Keesh and his father would not hesitate to share to all the people in their tribe the meat they earned in hunting. Keesh also even shared the secret of hunting fresh meat so that others can also hunt the same as his and they all have fresh and young meat to eat.

  • Smart

Thirteen-year-old Keesh was able to make his own way of hunting. His parents were able to raise a smart boy like him therefore the couple were also smart. It runs in the blood. Keesh also shared his head-craft way of hunting to others and smart people are not afraid of sharing ideas.
