What is the problem faced by Filipino fishermen from Negros?

Sagot :

Answer:

  • THE holding of National Fisherfolk Day on May 31 based on Presidential Proclamation 33 amid the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic has marked a new chapter in the continuing struggle of the small fishers, fish workers and coastal communities for a better life and future
  • This was stressed by Negros Occidental Small Fishers Alliance (Nosfa) and Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM)-Negros.
  • The groups, in a joint statement Tuesday, June 2, said already groaning from mass poverty, powerlessness, lack of participation in fisheries governance, constant environmental degradation, and the rising adverse effects of climate change, the small fishers have to face the continuing challenge of the Covid health and social crises which have already caused much suffering in terms of hunger and deprivation, restricted local travels and loss of jobs and livelihoods among the coastal communities.
  • Despite the pandemic, however, our collective work remains urgent for fishery and aquatic reforms, for building sustainable and resilient coastal communities and for working for the real empowerment of small fishers and fish workers in Negros and elsewhere in the Philippines," they said.
  • As a response of the small and marginal fishery sector and that of coastal communities to the continuing challenges of climate change, social reform and sustainable development, small fisher leaders in the province with the support of PRRM-Negros founded Nosfa in 2014.
