It really depends on the individual artist and his/her specific motivations, application and intentions, however, artists have been “expressing themselves, their communities, their relation to others and the world” since the earliest cave art. So, these notions have been around forever and are nothing new and are an intrinsic part of the creative process. All quality issues aside, every act of artistic creation is an act of self-expression from and by the artist. Some reflect their cultural and national traditions and identity and may also do mural and other projects as an expression of community values, issues, commentary, protest and solidarity. Some create works which reflect their view of an place in the world. The other thing is that all the arts are part of this variety of expression. The different arts are part of a family of equals and often in the hands of skilled practitioner creatives, are combined as a co-operative effort, using for example, sound, images and movement.
