Answer to the Following questions:

1. Where can you find metals, non-metals and noble gases in the periodic table of elements?

  • The noble gases, non -metallic or non metal are found on the left-hand side of the periodic table.

  • These non metals have poor electrical and heat conduction and they form acidic oxides. They are brittle and have low melting points. Also these non metals have low densities than other elements and have high electro negativity.

  • You can tell the valence electron number by referring to the group number for the elements in the group.

2. The group number will indicate the number of valence  electron.

  • Groups 1 and 2, 13 and 18 are the representative elements. Their valence electron number can be indicated by the group number.

  • For 1 and 2 group,  their valence electron for their group is 1 and 2 and for 13 and 18 simply subtract 10 to get the valence electron number for the elements included in the group. So for group 13 their valence number is 3 and 14 will have 4 valence electron number for example.

3. What do you notice in the number of valence electron of metals,non-metals and noble gases?

  • For metals, they will have fewer valence electron due to having high heat and electrical conductivity and non metals will have higher valence electrons because generally they will have poor electrical and heat conduction. The difference between them is that metals will have a luster and they are ductile so they can be formed into wires or any shapes compared to the physical properties of the non metals.

4. What kind of element has:

a. Elements with less than 4 valence electron will be mostly metals. The Boron group for example are the ones that will have less than 4 valence electron along with alkaline metals.

b. The elements that will have more than 4 valence electrons will mostly be non - metals due to the low heat and electrical conductivity and high electro negativity.

c. Elements with low electronegativity will be metal elements

d. Elements that will have high electronegativity will be non metals.

e. If the element has low ionization this means that the element is conducting electricity for ionization to happen. These mostly are metal elements.

f. Low Ionization elements are non metals due to their electrons closely attached to the nucleus and they typically are non conductive of electricity.
