Answer:
Another classification of volcanoes depends on the type of materials they spurt during their eruption.
Composite Volcano (Stratovolcano)
This volcano is formed from alternating layers of ash, lava flows, cinders (hot molten rock fragments), and bombs (solid volcanic rocks). It is tall, very steep, and tends to look like a cone. It also erupts explosively. Examples of this type are Mt. Mayon of the Philippines and Mt. Fuji of Japan.
Shield Volcano
As implied in its name, it looks like a large shield or dome at a distance. Shield Volcano consists of successive hardened fluid lava flows amassed over a long period. It has wide bases and gentle slopes. It erupts quietly because the lava is composed of mostly basalt. Examples of this volcano are Mauna Loa and Kilauea in Hawaii, USA.
Cinder Volcano
It is also called scoria cones. This type of volcano is composed of volcanic debris (ash and cooled rock fragments) accumulated over a period near volcanic vents. It spurts scoria or cinders, gas-filled rock fragments of lavas. It is referred to as a part of a volcano, but still a volcano itself. It also looks like a cone with steep angles. Cinder volcanoes are relatively smaller than stratovolcanoes, while the shield volcanoes have wider bases. Examples of this volcano are Paricutin in Mexico and Sunset Crater in the United States.
