Transverse Wave:

1.) Hold one end of the slinky on the floor. Ask someone to pull on the other end of the slinky until it is stretched to a reasonable length.

2.) Generate a wave pulse by flicking your wrist upward until you see a small loop moving along the slinky (see figure 8.1.6). Record the time it takes for a wave pulse to reach the other end.

3.) Generate two wave pulses in the slinky that will meet at the middle, using the instruction in figure 8.1.6. Make sure you are flicking your hands simultaneously. Describe what happens when wave pulses meet.

4.) Now, generate a wave pulse in the slinky by flicking your wrist forward (see figure 8.1.7). Record the time it takes for a wave pulse to reach the other end of the slinky.

5.) Generate two wave pulses in the slinky that will meet at the middle, using the instruction in figure 8.1.7. Describe what happens when wave pulses meet.

Guide Questions:
Q1. How do we know that waves carry energy?

Q2. What happens when waves pass by?

Q3. Did the activity help you understand the differences between transverse and longitudinal waves? Compare and contrast the two types of waves.

Guide Questions:

Q1. How do we know that waves carry energy?

In electromagnetic waves, energy is transferred through vibrations of electric and magnetic fields. In sound waves, energy is transferred through vibration of air particles or particles of a solid through which the sound travels. In water waves, energy is transferred through the vibration of the water particles.

Q2. What happens when waves pass by?

When waves pass by, they cause water to move up and down, transmitting the wave action across the ocean.

Q3. Did the activity help you understand the differences between transverse and longitudinal waves? Compare and contrast the two types of waves.

yes,Mechanical Waves are waves which propagate through a material medium (solid, liquid, or gas) at a wave speed which depends on the elastic and inertial properties of that medium. There are two basic types of wave motion for mechanical waves: longitudinal waves and transverse waves. The animations below demonstrate both types of wave and illustrate the difference between the motion of the wave and the motion of the particles in the medium through which the wave is travelling.
