Body Wave

Body wave is the type of wave which are useful for the seismologist in studying the interior of the Earth since body wave can travel in the interior of the Earth. Body wave has two sub-types, p-wave (primary wave) and s-wave (secondary wave). P-wave and s-wave can travel the interior of the Earth. Primary wave can travel in any medium (solid, liquid, gas) while s-wave can travel only in solid medium. Known the characteristics of p and s wave, scientist were able to identify which layer of the Earth are solid and are liquid.

Seismic Wave

During plate movement, slippage along the fault may occur which releases tremendous amount of energy radiated in all direction from the focus in a form of wave known as Seismic wave.

Two Types of Seismic Waves

  1. Surface wave
  2. Body wave

Surface wave

Surface wave can only travel on the surface of the earth and causes damage in infrastructure and in the environment.

Two types of Surface wave

  • Love wave
  • Rayleigh wave

Love wave

Love wave is named after A.E.H. Love, It is a little faster  than Rayleigh wave and makes the ground to move in a side to side like in a horizontal motion causing more damage,  like that of a snake’s which causes the ground to twist. This is makes Love waves results to  the most damage to structures during an earthquake.

Rayleigh wave

Rayleigh wave was named after  John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh, he mathematically predict the existence  of this kind of wave in 1885. Rayleigh wave rolls the ground along just like a wave rolls across an ocean or a lake. Since it rolls, it shakes the ground either  side-to-side  or down and up similar to the direction of the wave’s movement.  Most of the movement of the ground like shaking felt during an earthquake is because to the Rayleigh wave.

Body Wave

Body wave can travel in the interior of the earth which provides important details in the interior of the earth.

Two Types of Body wave

  • P wave (primary wave)
  • S wave (secondary wave)

Primary wave

The P-wave (primary wave) a pulse energy that moves or travel quickly through  the Earth and through liquids. The P-wave travels faster than the S-wave. The P-waves can also be a compressional waves, travel by particles  vibrating parallel to the direction the wave travel. They force the ground to  move back and forth forward and backward as they are compressed and expanded. Most  importantly, they travel through solids, liquids and gases.

Secondary wave

The S-wave ( shear wave or secondary wave) is a pulse energy that travels or moves slower than a P-wave through Earth and solids. The S-waves move  as shear or transverse waves, and force the ground to sway from side to side,  in rolling motion that shakes the ground backward and forward back and forth perpendicular to the  direction of the waves.
